THE LAKE ALBERT FOUNDATION
The Lake Albert Foundation is committed to sustainable development of the highlands in the cross-border region north of Lake Albert, in which food production and landscape regeneration support each other and thereby increase prosperity in the region.
Regenerative agriculture and reforestation
The focus area of the Lake Albert Foundation, known as the Albertine Rift, used to be one of the most biodiverse areas of the African continent. Nowadays, forests and wetlands have been replaced by agricultural fields and bare soils. Despite this, local communities are still facing hunger and malnutrition, exacerbated by unsustainable agricultural practices that are degrading soil and water quality.
The Lake Albert Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims to tackle these problems simultaneously. The Foundation sets up and supports projects in which local farmers play a central role, to restore the rapidly degrading landscape of the West Nile region through reforestation and regenerative agricultural practices and thereby promote sustainable development of the area. We do this by planting native tree species in agroforestry systems, restoring wetlands, and re-connecting fragmented habitats. This helps to restore natural ecosystems, which in turn increases the availability of food and other resources for local communities.
Bringing stakeholders together
We collaborate closely with Dutch and Ugandan stakeholders such as local communities, government institutions, research organisations, companies and others to develop and implement projects that are tailored to the needs of the local population. Our projects focus on the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, such as agroforestry, permaculture and soil conservation, that are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions.
Finally, we aim to support local communities in the development of sustainable businesses, such as ecotourism and agro-processing, to create alternative sources of income and reduce the pressure on natural resources. Ultimately, our goal is to create a vital and resilient Albertine Rift Valley, in which the ecosystems and the communities depending on them thrive together.
Support our work and help Ugandan farmers
by restoring biodiversity and soil life for a healthy field and a sufficient yield
With your contribution, the Lake Albert Foundation can work with local communities in the region to establish "regenerative agricultural systems" that allow nature and agriculture to work together. The Lake Albert Foundation has already planted a regenerative (syntropic) food forest at a Ugandan farm in Zombo district. From here, local farmers are trained to create their own food forest, which generates income and restores their agricultural land and biodiversity.
In this way, we are not just planting trees that will be cut down in 10 years, but creating new opportunities for farmers and nature!
With your help, we will develop training modules for these local farmers and provide them with a "starter kit" and support for planting their own food forests.
Thanks already for your donation!
